Americans are being swamped by credit card debt. College students are no exception. So don’t be surprised when your child returns home with not only a degree, but also thousands of dollars in debt.

According to Nellie Mae, the nation’s largest maker of student loans, this is nothing uncommon. The average college student carries $2,200 in credit card debt. Because the annual percentage rates of many student credit cards are high, the balance can easily grow to $5,800 by the time the student graduates if not managed properly.

So how do extreme credit card debt happen to even the smartest college students in the American college system?

For one, credit cards are easy to come by. In any one week, a student can receive dozens of calls on credit card offer. Some card companies practically force their credit on the students. All they had to do is say yes over the phone. When they won’t receive or return calls, the offers will come by mail. Is it any wonder then that college students are acquiring and using credit cards at a greater rate than ever before?

Card companies are not the only ones causing the high credit card debt. College students themselves must bear certain responsibilities. They often buckle under peer pressure to spend even though they don’t mean to and never want to get into all those debts. They are also young and inexperience financially. They are not clear of the consequences their actions will bring them and don’t know how to manage the debts properly.

Having a credit card appeals to most college students. When credit card debt starts to pile up though that appeal quickly fades. Watching a balance that just doesn’t seem to go down is stressful. Having a credit card may be cool. Learning how to manage credit card debt properly is even better.
