Debt Ceiling Polls Gallup

Mr. Romney! You Need a Make Over

What chance does a candidate who came in a poor third losing to a pastor have in securing the Republican nomination and then challenging the Democrats? Well apparently, a lot, if the latest rumblings from the Republican camp are to be believed.

Gallup polls indicate that about 27% Republicans and right-leaning people prefer Romney to be the choice for spearheading the Republican challenge for the Presidency. In fact, many Republicans believed that McCain had been the wrong choice in 2008 and had it been Romney, things would have been otherwise.

Well you may win the Republican nomination for the run but can you win the election Mr. Romney?

Perhaps you can, only if you have complete make over.

Here are a few tips.

Yes, we know you are a successful business man, a great venture capitalist, who therefore may just be the right person to rescue the economy instead of a dreamy lawyer with predilection for mellifluous words. Maybe, instead of inspiring rhetoric we may see hard practical action from you Mr. Romney.

Perhaps you will find courage to tackle head-on, Republican dogmas that have been to a large extent responsible for the mess that we are in.

We are talking about federal spending. In case you have forgotten, federal spending increased exponentially under the previous Republican watch and we spend trillions more in fighting wars we never should have got involved in. If you thought the last election was about McCain’s weakness; it was not. It was about an American public fed up with an establishment bent on ruining a booming economy which they spectacularly succeeded. This is the first point of reference for you to take on, for the people are tired, tired of promises that the government is simply unable to keep. So what are you going to do about spending and balancing our books and seeing us get back to a respectable lifestyle that denominated the American Way of Life?

You talk about permanent tax cuts. Good idea, what are the specifics though? Money cannot be generated out of thin air, you of all the people would know better. Your solution of galvanizing private entrepreneurship as a precursor to economic revival is laudable but what will you do to make businesses more attractive within the homeland? Can you offer solutions for flight of manufacturing, jobs, our creaking infrastructure, cracked roads, and rickety bridges?

Maybe it is time you promised to take down those multiple federal agencies that duplicate each other’s work and produce precious little value addition. We are talking of a myriad of intelligence agencies and the bewildering array of departments that constitute the Department of Homeland Security.

We are talking about our new ‘quagmires’ Iraq and Afghanistan, how about a clean getaway? Can you promise the American people that? You will save a cool three trillion dollars straightaway and will have no problems with debt ceilings. You will also stop hemorrhage of our finest men and women, 6000 of whom have already lost their lives, thousands injured and billions of dollars in veteran healthcare. Your present position on Afghanistan is far from reassuring. To ‘stay the course’ is a beaten path we have already trodden and paid for with American lives with no tangible gains to show for. If you really want to win the elections, declare emphatically that when you become the President, all our troops from the two theaters will return home. Make this promise Mr. Romney and see how the voters embrace you.

What you say about education, environment, gun control, immigration, same sex, abortion and a host of other issues matter but not as much as the Economy and War as outlined above. Tackle these first Mr. Romney; your make over will be complete and so shall be your victory in 2012.
