Weeds is an American comedy-drama television series, created by Jenji Kohan and produced by Lionsgate Television, which began airing on the Showtime cable television network in 2005. The show revolves around Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker), a widowed suburbanite mother of two, who turned to selling marijuana to support her family after her husband unexpectedly died. Over the course of the show, Nancy becomes involved in illegal activities on an escalating scale; the first three seasons deal mainly with selling and growing marijuana locally; in later seasons the show features the smuggling of a variety of contraband from Mexico to the United States and the dubious machinations of Nancyâ�s new husband’s campaign for the governorship of the Mexican state of Baja’s. The first three seasons take place in the fictional town of Agrestic, California. The primary locale of seasons four and five is the fictional beachside border town of Ren Mar. At the start of the sixth season, the Botwin family relocates to Seattle, Washington. The title plays on the word “weed”, a slang for marijuana, implying that American suburbs grow akin to weeds. The title sequence of the first three seasons features the satirical song “Little Boxes”, while scenes depict suburbanites who dress the same, drive exactly the same sport utility vehicle, and live in the same houses.

Weeds Season 6 has hit a momentum pitfall. Conceptually, the season on the run was a great concept. The open road was ahead of the Botwin family. Anything could happen. But just like Nancy’s life, viewers are slowly losing all sense of stability. For a while Cesar and Ignacio grounded Weeds, but soon even they were phased out.

Now Weeds Season 6 is really starting to feel like an actual road trip. Jenji Kohan may have a final destination mapped out, but the journey to that final stop is riddled with mostly forgettable moments. That’s how road trips are. It’s fun at first. You may have a few flings along the way, like with Mark-Paul Gosselaar, but at some point the thrill wears out and you need to return home.
Episode 9 ended with a video interview of Nancy’s sister. The scene faded into Nancy’s forlorn face, giving viewers the feeling that Nancy was remembering her sister or at least her past. Nancy then tells Andy to make a turn into presumably familiar surroundings.

So, Nancy is going home, back to her roots. But, viewers are not. This is still unfamiliar territory. It’s one thing to mature from simple drug dealers to human smugglers to mafia trophy wives. It’s an entirely different thing to uproot viewers and just leave them dangling with no foundation. Simply selling hash cross-country alone doesn’t make Weeds the show fans have come to adore. Truly, it’s time for this endless road trip to come to an end.

The pediatrician in episode 9 broke down Nancy’s failings as a mother. Why? Kohan wanted viewers to start wondering about Nancy’s own upbringing – if they hadn’t already. In Weeds Season 6 Episode 10, Richard Dreyfuss comes on board as someone from Nancy’s past. Hopefully, his character can steer the show back on course before we head into Weeds Season 7. Viewers would hate to see Weeds come to an end, but they’d be even more disheartened if Weeds fades out into lackluster obscurity.
