Identity theft: an unexpected present from santa claus

It has been already widely advertised that identity theft crimes have skyrocketed in the last few years. This crime rates have shown a significant increase in the last months and experts highly advised Americans to be aware of being a victim of identity thieves as more and more people use their credit card to make online transactions and shop in installments and they are more prone to share their private information to total strangers.

Thus, after unwrapping the presents and returning the less-than-desired gifts, you may like to check your credit and bank statements very thoroughly. You could find out about certain purchases you don’t remember doing and that, in fact, you never did.

Susan Schitz, senior regulatory specialist for the Wisconsin Office of Privacy Protection, comments that, unless you want identity theft to be an unexpected Christmas present, you should devote some time to carefully look for  transactions that you’ve made and make sure that they have receipts to match up.

She added that nearly 3,000 Wisconsinites reported incidents of financial identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission last year. Nationally, that number topped 11 million.
“It’s an amazing number,” said Ron Von Haden, executive vice president at Professional Insurance Agents of Wisconsin. “Every day, every month, every year — it’s crazy.”
“There are so many different ways these days for your identity to be compromised,” Von Haden added. “These people are very good at it. These aren’t just youngsters messing around for the fun of it. These are people who make a living off of other people’s identities.” He also adds that people should be really conscious of this serious crime and pay special attention and track their identity cardds. Not only using carelessly your credit card can be dangerous, but sharing your private information over the phone such as your full name, address, SSN identification and any other credit information with somebody you don’t know can make you victim of this crime. Remember that they are professionals that are preying over distracted people to hunt them. And what’s even worse, you may not discover that your credit ratings have decreased or that you have a huge debt with a credit card supplier months and months later. And, then, recovering your information and regaining your previous credit status is really stressing and time-consuming.
Anthony Falbl and his wife, Jessica, of Greenville, recently learned that lesson the hard way.
“My wife went shopping Black Friday and went to the ATM and saw that she was overdrawn a few hundred dollars,” Anthony Falbl said. “Her check that got deposited the day before plus a few hundred dollars was cleared out.”

The Falbls filed reports with the police immediately and then learned someone in West Virginia had used Jessica’s information to buy items online.

“Based on that information, (authorities) were able to get search warrants for the home,” Anthony Falbl said.
Fortunately, the money was returned to the Falbls within a week.
But not everyone is as lucky.
If you do notice something unusual on your statements, report it immediately.
Victims of identity theft typically have 60 days to file a fraud claim with their credit card company or bank.
